How to read an open-world map
Fog, towers, fragments and markers: what each kind of map is telling you.

01Four kinds of reveal
Some maps start hidden and clear as you explore (Ghost of Tsushima). Some reveal regions when you reach a high point (Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man). Some give you fragments to find (Elden Ring). And some sell you the map, as Sable does.
02Markers or no markers
Many games let you turn off waypoints and the minimap. Without them, you read landmarks: towers, rivers, mountains and roads. It is slower and much more memorable.
03Make your own markers
Almost every map lets you place pins. Use different icons for "come back later", "too hard for now" and "nice view".
04Look before you open the map
Before opening the map, look around from high ground. Most worlds are designed to be read from viewpoints.
05Keep a paper note
For long games, a small notebook with places and ideas makes returning after a break far easier.
